Nelson Custom Builders is an owner-led general contractor serving the Greater Baton Rouge area. Founded in 2021 by David Nelson and backed by a lifetime of hands-on building experience — more than 30 years in the field — we've earned a reputation for craftsmanship, integrity, and standing behind every detail of our work.
From custom homes and additions to major remodels and commercial build-outs, we treat every project as if it were our own.
David's story starts on a job site at fourteen. His father — determined that he understand both the value of an education and the meaning of hard work — sent him to dig footings at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center through the heat of a Louisiana summer. He fell in love with the work, and spent every summer, break, and holiday on a job site from then on.
That passion carried him through a Construction Management degree from LSU's College of Engineering, with a minor in Business Administration, and into more than two decades of building at every scale — industrial projects across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas; commercial construction; and years on the architectural side, getting products into plans and specifications, guiding design, and teaching the trade to contractors and distributors. Few builders have seen the process from as many sides.
In 2021, David finally built the company he'd dreamed of his whole life — Nelson Custom Builders, under his own license and his own name. The work took off almost immediately, on a principle he still runs the company by:

A devoted husband to Brooke and father of three, and a member of St. Aloysius Parish, David believes building is the work he was called to do. His youngest — already a fixture on the job site — fully intends to carry the company into the next generation. When he isn't building, you'll find him in the Louisiana outdoors he loves: hunting, fishing, and cooking for the people he cares about.
